Cobra soldier aim is as legendary as ever.

Back in 2008, Warren Ellis said no Lady Jaye in Resolute Apr. 23rd, 2009 @ 06:24 pm
Found a blog entry by Warren Ellis, who said last year that Lady Jaye is not in GI Joe: Resolute. Which implies the lady in Ep4 is Cover Girl, the blond supermodel turned brunette soldier. Certainly not Jinx. Gotta wait and see.

Blog also revealed an amusing production conversation between Ellis and Hasbro.

"HASBRO: No, Warren, you cannot wipe Beijing from the face of the earth.

WARREN ELLIS: Shit. (pause) What about Moscow?

HASBRO: Wiping Moscow from the face of the earth would be fine."

I spy with my little eye someone that looks like Lady Jaye. And Dial Tone's went from burlyman to chick.

There are days I miss the comics characterization of Stormshadow.
» Yo. Joe. So good.
Finally. A GI Joe animation where people actually die.

Not ye olde daily cartoon GI Joe. You know because Roadblock don't feel like rhyming no more.

Snake Eyes joy.

Geek moment naming the Joes assembled.

» Rites is coming!

Rites of Spring is an annual musical event held in my alma mater, Vanderbilt University. Happens every spring, which is around now. It’s surprisingly a pretty big event these days; back when I was there it was a modest affair with only one guest singer a year. The students organizing the event thus advertised any way they could.

This was one memorable example. This guy was just standing next to the dining hall (so people would definitely see him) with three fire batons wielded Zoro-style. All to attract attention to the writing on his chest.

After a cold winter, shenanigans like this was a welcome way to greet spring. Rites is Coming!!!!

» PS3 HD updating
Spent the whole day yesterday with Joe on tech. Joe decided to buy a whole new machine, and since we we were going to Low Yat I decided to try upgrading the PS3.

Got a hiccup; while the instructions say the PS3 should format the hard disk upon detecting it, it actually said it has no idea what to do and could I give it the latest update? The online websites didn't mention this particular step.

Turned out after feeding it the latest update, the formatting and upgrading went fine. My guess is the PS3 has a base OS, but it stores all the updates within the hard disk. Since I swapped the hard disk out, it has no updates stored so it asks for the latest before proceeding. The websites probably didn't mention it because they did the HD swap tutorial before an update was around.

At least now the PS3 has a 250GB HD and another 250GB backup as necessary. So at least I know whatever I have on the PS3 can be secured.

Everything seems fine except one hitch; the Rock Band DLC songs didn't transfer properly. I can see the DLCs listed in-game, even hear the sample audio track, but it won't load during play. That's something I need to check with Harmonix to figure out what's going on.
» The Grass-Mud Horse
Mainland Chinese people gets censored a lot by their government.

So, Mainland Chinese against this censorship now have an icon for fighting against the oppression: the grass-mud horse.

They post about the horse, sing songs about it, even sell toys about it. Which sounds pretty innocent, which means the Chinese Govt can't censor them.

The joke is that "Grass Mud Horse" (草泥马) in Chinese is phonetically equivalent to “Fuck Your Mother!”.

Video comes with enlightening subtitles.

Read all about it here: http://chinadigitaltimes.net/tag/grass-mud-horse/
» Oh look, heads.

What started of as a silly sketch turned into something fun. Posting some pieces now, hope to put up the whole thing soon.

On an interesting note, Alex Proyas is now an irregular blogger on SlashFilm. His first post? Encouraging people to see the Director's Cut of Dark City, recut for HD on Blu-Ray.
» Allah and Olé
A while back I posted about Elizabeth Gilbert's talk on genius. Here's the video of the actual talk.

I do like the end part where she goes "Allah, Olé, Olé, Allah..". It's a beautiful cultural mash moment.
» Alan Moore's thoughts
Wired's interview with Alan Moore.

"..it has occurred to me that the superhero really only originates in America. That seems to be the only country that has produced this phenomenon. Yes, we have had knockoffs of American superheroes originating in this country and presumably in other parts of the world, but they're not natural to this environment. They're an alien species. And I've thought about it and wondered why that was...."

"...My books are still the same books as they were before they were made into films. The books haven'tmchanged. I'm reminded of the remark by, I think it was Raymond Chandler, where he was asked about what he felt about having his books "ruined" by Hollywood. And he led the questioner into his study and showed him all the books there on the bookshelf, and said, Look—there they all are. They're all fine. They're fine. They're not ruined. They're still there. And I think that's pretty much the attitude I take. If the books are as good as I think they are, then they are the things that will endure. And if the films are as bad as I think they are, then they are the things that will not endure. So, I suppose we'll see at the end of the day, whenever that is. ".

One really good thing in this interview is that he explains the difference between comics and movies. Pretty darned good arguments.
» A Deviant you can't Watch anymore
Was browsing artists on DeviantArt when I found this: A DeviantArt account whose artist has recently passed away.

http://hakubaikou.deviantart.com/

It is sad to hear someone as skilled as her being gone(her Pirate "vs" Ninja with rum and sake? Inspirational.), yet it is heartening to note that an archive of her work lives on, accessible to anyone visiting her site. There's no question of what she loved and lived for because it's all there for anyone to see. Nor there's doubt who loved and enjoyed her works; it's all recorded and visible as per how DeviantArt works.

As Wired puts it when Randy Pausch died, the Internet has created a new phenomenon: a distributed funeral. Being a DeviantArt account means that not only Hakubaikou's lifework is as permanent and accessible as the Internet itself, her family will also be able to see how people around the world mourned her. On DeviantArt and on the Googleverse.

"Still, at whatever scale and medium chosen, all these death rituals retain their universal purpose. They all provide convincing evidence that though the star may die, the universe continues. Though the Marine is gone, the corps lives on." - The aforementioned Wired article

Sad news and yet, a pretty cool outcome.
